The Liverpool Affordable Housing Initiative
In Liverpool, a growing demand for affordable housing presented a significant challenge: building high-quality, low-cost
A development of 18 passive-standard houses.
In the environmentally conscious market of Stockholm, the developer sought to construct a residential project that not only adhered to Passive House standards—one of the strictest energy performance criteria—but also integrated smoothly within a densely populated urban area. The primary challenges were to ensure ultra-high energy efficiency and maintain superior indoor air quality, all while managing the complexities of urban construction and meeting tight project timelines.
MMC Eco Homes utilized its advanced panelised system to meet these ambitious goals. The prefabricated components were designed to maximize thermal efficiency and minimize thermal bridges, crucial for meeting Passive House standards. The system’s precision in manufacturing ensured that each unit would perform optimally in terms of energy use and comfort, thus supporting sustainable living in a busy city setting.
Detailed planning sessions were conducted to tailor the MMC Eco Homes panelised system to meet Passive House criteria. This included optimizing the design for air tightness and superior insulation, essential for the harsh Swedish winters. The designs were also adapted to suit the urban context, ensuring that the aesthetics and scale harmonized with Stockholm’s architectural standards.
The construction phase saw the rapid assembly of the prefabricated panels on-site, with the entire structural framework of each house completed in under a week. This efficiency significantly reduced the typical disturbances associated with urban construction, such as noise, traffic, and material waste.
With the structures in place, the focus shifted to internal and external finishes that complemented the energy-efficient design. Each home featured triple-glazed windows and advanced heat recovery ventilation systems, which were integrated seamlessly to maintain the integrity of the Passive House standards.
“MMC Eco Homes’ innovative building solution allowed us to quickly and efficiently meet Passive House standards, a feat we initially thought would be both time-consuming and cost-prohibitive. The end result was a community of top-tier energy-efficient homes that were completed ahead of schedule and under budget, proving that high standards and affordability can go hand in hand.” – Sofia Bergström, Project Lead
The use of MMC Eco Homes’ panelised system enabled the swift assembly of the houses, with the entire development completed months ahead of a similar scale project using traditional construction methods.
Each home achieved Passive House certification, ensuring ultra-low energy consumption for heating and cooling, which significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the development.
Despite the high standards required for Passive House certification, the modular approach brought considerable cost savings in terms of reduced labor and decreased construction time, enhancing the overall affordability of the project.
The developer praised the project for not only achieving the rigorous Passive House standards but also for the speed of construction and the quality of the finished homes, setting a new benchmark for residential projects in Sweden.
