The Liverpool Affordable Housing Initiative
In Liverpool, a growing demand for affordable housing presented a significant challenge: building high-quality, low-cost
A residential Eco Home.
This beautiful project was a challenge for all parties involved due to the site constraints (only one point of entry to site which was 900mm wide) and nature of the project. The client needed to find alternative methods to build which were built to last in their carefully designed forever home.
For this very well architecturally designed project, we faced a significant challenge with a highly constrained site, limiting our ability to use standard panelised construction methods. The restricted space required a more flexible and customized approach, with the need to manoeuvre and install individual panels in a precise and efficient manner. This project demanded innovative solutions to effectively utilize the available space while ensuring the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the bespoke house. The client was looking to get a highly energy efficient building which had an A rating.
To overcome the challenges of the tight site for the bespoke house, we adapted our approach to use individual panels instead of the ‘MMC Eco Homes panelised system’. Our team carefully designed and fabricated each panel to fit the unique dimensions and constraints of the site. Precision in planning and execution was key, ensuring that each panel could be maneuvered into place efficiently, even in the limited space. This bespoke solution not only maintained the structural integrity and design aesthetics of the house but also demonstrated our ability to innovate and customize our construction methods to meet specific project needs.
Working alongside the architect, we used enhanced fabric specification and thermal comfort design modelling to ensure Net Carbon Zero was reached. The building will have an A rating, and with the incorporation of renewables, will have a negative carbon emission.
Collaborative planning sessions between the Architects’ team and MMC Eco Homes to align on design, materials, and construction techniques.
Delivery of pre-fabricated, high-quality, eco-friendly materials tailored to the project’s specifications. The materials were provided in individual panels, which were erected on site. The flooring was a mixture of cassettes, and individual posi joists.
MMC Eco Homes provided periodic oversight and technical support, ensuring the construction team utilized the materials effectively.
“We were looking to build the house in traditional construction initially, as all we knew of modular was the old prefabs – oh how wrong we were!! It was suggested by our architect to look at MMC Eco Homes due to the constraints of the site. Once we were informed they have a durability assessment for a minimum of 60 years through their BOPAS accreditation, and would last as long as a traditionally built house with superior quality – we were interested. Ciaran, Paul and their team were incredible throughout the process, and made the whole journey seamless! One of the major benefits which we were not aware of when we started our journey, was the cost savings we made using MMC Eco Homes system!! We don’t know why anyone would build using anyone else – highly recommended!!” – Phil, Client
